McCain claims victory in Republican race
Sen. John McCain swept all four nominating contests to become the
presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
McCain won primaries in Texas, Ohio, Vermont and Rhode Island, giving
him more than the 1,191 delegates needed to clinch the GOP nomination.
On the Democratic side, Sen. Hillary Clinton was projected to break
Barack Obama's 12-contest winning streak with a victory in Rhode Island.
Obama was projected to take Vermont, but the contests in Ohio and
Texas were too close to call.
"I am very, very grateful and pleased to note that tonight, my
friends, we have won enough delegates to claim with confidence, humility
and a great sense of responsibility, that I will be the Republican
nominee for president of the United States," McCain told supporters
Tuesday night.
