Police post to co-ordinate security

A special police post has been set up at the Pettah Bo tree junction
to co-ordinate security operations during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year
where large crowds are expected to throng Pettah area. Director,
Community Police Unit, SSP I.M. Karunaratne will be in charge of the
operation.
The police post would also act as an information centre to help
people who get stranded in the city.
The Centre has been linked to the Fort Railway station installed with
loudspeakers to handle emergency, The policemen manning the centre will
keep a tab on pavement hawkers, who will be required to obtain security
clearance from the police post.
No outsiders will be permitted to sell their merchandise in the area
without approval.
Meanwhile, mammoth security operation will be deployed in the entire
country during the festive season from April 5- 15.
The plan has been drawn up by the Defence Ministry in conjunction
with IGP Victor Perera and DIG Colombo Nimal Mediweka in his capacity as
the chairman of the Civil monitoring committees.
For the first time civil committees set up in 14,913 Grama Niladhari
Division and 322 Divisional Secretariats in the country will be
mobilised to provide security during the festive season.
Hitherto these duties were performed only by the Police.
Each Civil Committee consist of 10 persons from each village. In
addition to the Civil Monitoring Committees armed services personnel too
will be deployed in the country except the North to maintain vigil
during the festive season. |
