Windies eye victory after Lanka collapse
CRICKET: (AFP) Sri Lanka suffered a dramatic second innings batting
collapse on Saturday to hand the West Indies a superb opportunity to win
the second and final Test.
At lunch on the third day, Sri Lanka, trailing by 16 runs on first
innings, reached 78 for five in their second knock with Thilan
Samaraweera not out on 15 and Chamara Silva not out on five. Sri Lanka
had dismissed West Indies for 294 in their first innings 50 minutes
after the start with Muttiah Muralitharan ending with five wickets for
79 runs from 29.2 overs.
But the Sri Lankans soon found themselves in trouble as the home team’s
fast bowlers, led by Jerome Taylor, gained appreciable bounce and
movement from the lively Queen’s Park Oval pitch and ran through their
opponents’ top order.
Taylor has been the West Indies’ most successful bowler so far with two
wickets for 22 runs from six overs and also contributed a run out to
help put the skids under the tourists’ batting.
