Sports promoter Upali Hewage is DIG Crimes

GENERAL: Sports administrator and promoter, Upali Hewage, has been promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) from March 12 and is now DIG (Crimes).

A former Thurstanite, Hewage represented the school at athletics and rugby. He was a Cadet too. He captained the rugby side in 1968 as a No. 8 forward and some of his contemporaries were Tissa Nanayakkara, Captain Mangala Ratnayake of Army, Captain Milinda Ratnayake, Sunil Jayakoddy, Major General Wasantha Perera and a host of others who made their mark in later years.

Hewage is a Vice-President of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation, executive committee member of the Sri Lanka Football Federation and since serving Tangalle as a SSP, Hewage, played a major role in the reconstruction of the D. A. Rajapaksa Stadium. He was Secretary of the Hambantota District Sports Foundation and many other sports bodies. L.G.
