The country's premier tourist destinations the Grand Hotel, Nuwara Eliya once again was awarded the first place in the April Blooms flower show which was concluded at the Victoria Park, here.

Several competitors both in the commercial and home gardens participated where the Governor of the Central Province Tikiri Kobbekaduwa and Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, and several other Ministers were present.

A large crowd which included holiday makers, foreign tourists, and others were present, during the April festivities.

The show was organised by the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council, under the chairmanship of Mayor Chandanalal Karunaratne.

Addressing a large and distinguished gathering which included a number of horticulturists, and home gardeners, Governor Kobbekaduwa, said that he was in a position to participate in this annual flower show for three consecutive years and was delighted to see the array of beautiful flowers exhibited, in addition to the large development of the city limits. And all thanks should go to the Mayor and the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council. He further added that the city of Kandy should take a lesson from Nuwara Eliya.

The Governor said that he intends to organise a similar flower show in Kandy for the benefit of the horticulturists and home gardeners.

The Governor said that Nuwara Eliya figured as an important city in terms of major tea cultivations, exotic vegetables and the centre for tourism, which in turn brought in colossal amounts of foreign exchange to the country.

At the prize awarding ceremony the Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, who was the Chief Guest congratulated the Grand Hotel, for the magnificent flower garden it has maintained by the management headed by General Manager Palaka D.L. Perera, and the team of its workforce headed by garden supervisor Mrs. V. Parameswary.

Mayor Chandanalal Karunaratne thanked its officials, and the State for all the assistance extended towards making the April season a success.
