World Bank pledges $ 10 m to rebuild schools in Eastern Province

The World Bank will provide US$ 10 million in July to reconstruct and renovate school buildings damaged in the Eastern Province.

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha told the Sunday Observer yesterday that he had already directed Education Ministry officials to carry out a survey on damaged schools in the Province.

It has been reported that a few schools and parts of some school buildings in the Trincomalee, Ampara and Batticaloa districts were destroyed due to the war situation and other calamities in the past.

Minister Premajayantha said this situation has slightly disrupted the educational activities in the Province and steps will be taken to rectify the situation under the supervision of the newly established Eastern Provincial Council.

When asked about the current position of the school educational activities, the Minister said many damaged schools have been already renovated and no children were isolated under any circumstances.
