ADB aid for water scheme in Chilaw

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will grant assistance to set up a new water supply scheme in the Chilaw town which is a long-felt need of the area.

The Chairman of the Chilaw Council, H. P. Fernando said due to the current demand they are unable to provide a quality service to the people in the area.


8.6% growth in tourist arrivals

The number of tourist arrivals has shown a considerable growth of 8.6% compared to last year.

According to the Tourism Ministry the number of tourist arrivals in March last year was at 35,031 while it is 38,049 this year.

The industry has made plans to hold round table discussions with officials from the hotel trade, representatives from the Chambers of Commerce and Small and Medium Enterprise officials to increase tourist arrivals.


Offices to monitor Lankans in Baharain

Bahrain will open an office in Sri Lanka to ensure adherence to employment procedures according to the two countries’ laws.

“A representative office of the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) will be opened in Sri Lanka and a similar office of the Sri Lankan Bureau of Foreign Employment will be opened in Bahrain,” said Foreign Employment Minister Keheliya Rambukwella.


More business with UK

Nearly 25 Lankan information and communication technology companies will tour London in July to take part in a bilateral partnering event with the aim of doing more business overseas.


Vie for more skilled jobs in UAE

More Sri Lankan migrant workers should vie for skilled jobs in the hospitality and hotel industry in the UAE, rather than opting to work in factories or households, Sri Lankan Ambassador to the UAE, Mohammed Nabavi Junaid told the Khaleej Times, that Lankan workers could get a better share of the hospitality and the health sector and that they are not focusing on unskilled labourers any more.


Books launch today

The launch of three books Sivanu Manokaran’s Oru Manal Weedum Sila Erumai Madugalum, Kavipriya Nisha’s Ailukku Nomarssu and A. A. M. Jabir’s Weleegal Suwasikku Irawukal published by Purawalar Puththaka Poonga will take place today, May 25 at 4.30 p.m. at the Sugathadasa Sports Hotel, Colombo 14.

The event will be held under the patronage of the Founder of Purawalar Puththaka Poonga, Hashim Omar, Lake House Chairman, Bandula Padmakumara, Managing Director of Virakesari publications, Kumar Nadesan and Thinakural Publications, Chairman, S. P. Samy. (RF)
