The show that produces cricketing legends is on

The Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year Contest, which has produced Sri Lanka's cricketing legends for the past 29 years, has gained national status. Sri Lanka Cricket has given its blessings to the 30th Observer-Mobitel Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year Contest which starts today with the voting for the Most Popular cricketer - All-Island and Outstation awards.

There are some people who merely talk and not recognise the deeds of cricketers who need merit. One such cricketer who has suffered in the past is none other than Sri Lanka’s world beater - the champion off-spinner and ‘Doosra’ specialist Muttiah Muralitharan who ‘found his feet’ in the game at an early age at St. Anthony’s College, Katugastota.

The name of Ranjan Madugalle - a top Sri Lanka cricketer and a cricketer who blossomed out from Royal College was the talk of the town in the latter part of the 19th century. He really made his presence felt in inter-school cricket and was picked as the Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year in 1978 and 1979.

Thilan Thushara Samaraweera who became the tenth Anandian to represent Sri Lanka in Test cricket, was twice winner of the Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year award in 1994 and 1995 and on both occasions, he also won the Best Batsman and Best All-rounder awards too.

Former Ananda all-rounder Muthumudalige Pushpakumara who won the Rs. 100,000 Player of the Tournament award in the 2007-2008 Premier League, earlier won the prestigious Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year award 1999 for his fine performances.

Lahiru Peiris - Observer Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer in 2004 and 2005

Lahiru Peiris, the St. Peter’s College Cricket captain of 2006 who is celebrates his 21st birthday today (June 1st). He became the first Peterite to win the Observer Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year Contest - All Island twice in 2004 and 2005.

Former Royal College, Panadura captain Lindamlilage Prageetha Chamara Silva, better known as Chamara Silva who played for Deccan Chargers in the recent Indian Premier League Tournament, will don the Sri Lanka cap and will play for Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup to be played in Pakistan this month.

Sanjeewa Ranatunga - sixth Anandian to win Observer Award

Former Ananda College captain Sanjeewa Ranatunga, the fifth of six Ranatunga brothers, became the sixth Anandian to win the prestigious Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year award in 1988. The star left handed batsman, Sanjeewa had the honour of leading the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team and he also represented the country in Tests and One-day Internationals.

Master-blaster Sanath won Observer Outstation Cricketer Award in 1988

Master-blaster Sanath Jayasuriya - a former Sri Lanka skipper, has been very much a part and parcel of inter-school cricket in the country and he excelled in cricket while at St. Servatius College, Matara and was picked as Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year in the Outstation Segment in 1988.

Double honour for Anandian Malith Gunathileka

Ananda College captain Dushan Malith Gunathileka, the star allrounder, created somewhat of a record when he was picked Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2007. But before getting that honour, the Observer readers picked him to be the Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year All-Island 2007.
