Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year:
All set for Mega Show
The stage is set for the country’s premier school cricket awards
ceremony which has produced cricketing legends during the past 30 years.
The 30th Observer-Mobitel Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year Mega Show
will be held on Thursday at 5.15 p.m. at the BMICH.
The chief guest will be ICC Chief Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle, the
first recipient of the prestigious Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the
Year award in 1979.
Sri Lanka’s World Cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga (1980 and
1982), Master blaster Sanath Jayasuriya (1988 – Outstation) and World
record holder Muttiah Muralitharan (1991), all past winners of the
Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year awards will add colour to the
galaxy of stars that include Sri Lanka’s cricket captain Mahela
Jayawardene and world cup hero Lasith Malinga.
The two-hour cricketing spectacular will feature Bhathiya and
Santhush who would also sing the Sri Lanka cricket song.
There will be several other eye-catching items as the most
outstanding cricketers and teams of the 2007/08 season share 34
glittering trophies and cash awards.
Amongst the VVIPs guests would be Ministers Anura Priyadharshana Yapa,
Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, Gamini Lokuge, Bandula Basnayake and Nirmala
Kotelawala.
Four months of extensive voting for the Most Popular Schoolboy
Cricketers concluded on Thursday. St.Joseph’s College captain Ruwantha
Fernandopulle polled a record 103,076 votes to be crowned Observer-Mobitel
Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer (All-Island).
He had a commanding lead over Naveen Kavikara of D.S. Senanayake
(47,163) who finished second.
Rashitha Dilan of Bandaranayake MV, Gampaha emerged as the Observer-Mobitel
Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year (Outstation) when he
finished with 59,090 votes, ahead of Shehan Silva of Joseph Vaz College,
Wennappuwa (35,173) who became the runner-up.
A limited number of special entry passes are available at the Sunday
Observer Sports Desk on a first-come-first-served basis.
