Donations to mark Golden Jubilee of university
An auditorium, gymnasium, swimming pool, play ground and a post
office complex at a cost exceeding Rs. one billion will be donated to
the Sri Jayewardenepura University to mark the golden jubilee
celebrations of the university which falls next year. President Mahinda
Rajapaksa said he will extend his fullest support to implement the
projects of the university.
The President was speaking at a meeting to finalise arrangements for
the jubilee celebrations attended by representatives of the university
staff and the Alumni Association held at Temple Trees recently.

Lecture on yoga
Amarendra Narayan Lal and Roy Biswas from Vivekananda Kendra, Yoga
University, Bangalore will deliver a lecture on "Yoga as alternative
therapy for various ailments" on July 15 at 6 p.m. at the Indian
Cultural Centre, 133, Bauddhaloka Mw., Colombo 04.
Malay oratory competition
The Conference of Sri Lanka Malays (Konfrensi Melayu Sri Lanka) has
invited entries for their Malay Oratory competition to revive the Malay
language. The competition will be conducted in four age groups 'under
12', 'under 17', 'under 21' and the Open category (Age will be
calculated as at June 18).
Every participant should choose a topic from the three in every age
category which can be given upon request.
Five minutes duration will be given for every contestant.
The speeches will be judged on the content, presentation and the
proper command of the Malay language (Bahasa Melayu Antarabangsa or Sri
Lankan Malay) can be used.
The competition will be held on 19th July in Colombo.
Lecture on Gam-Madu rituals
Srilal Perera, will deliver a lecture on "Indo-Lanka relation in the
Gam-Madu rituals of Pattini amma" on July 18 at 6 p.m. at the Indian
Cultural Centre, 133, Bauddhaloka Mw., Colombo 04.
President Gayoom lauds cricket team
Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has congratulated Sri Lanka
on its victory at the Asia Cup Cricket Tournament.
In a message to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Maldivian President
has conveyed his congratulations to the friendly people of Sri Lanka and
the Sri Lankan cricket team on their magnificent victory.
Awarded Royal Pundit degree
Ven. Kebiliyapola Dhammalankara Thera of Nawa Polonnaru Gal Viharaya,
Dehiwala has been awarded the Royal Pundit (Rajakeeya Panditha) degree
by the Oriental Studies Society of Sri Lanka.
Ven. Thera who is the Principal of the Sri Suddhananda Dhamma School
and a member of the tutorial staff of the Shastrananda Pirivena,
Dehiwala, is a past pupil of the Dharmodaya Pirivena, Madanwala,
Vidyodaya Pirivena and the Aquinas College of Colombo.
Graduates from London Metropolitan
Asela Indunil Gunasekara graduated from the London Metropolitan
University with a first class degree in Computing and Information
Systems.
An old boy of Holy Cross College, Kalutara and Ananda College,
Colombo, Asela is the son of D.I.G., Upali Gunasekara and Chandrakanthi.
Palingu receives her PhD in Anatomy
Mrs. Palingu Maduka Aponso (nee Dhanapala) recently received her
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Anatomy from the University of
Auckland, New Zealand. Palingu, a past student of Musaeus College and
Vishaka Vidyalaya, Colombo is the daughter of Swarna Dhanapala and Dr.
Andra Dhanapala (former Senior Lecturer, University of Colombo and
University of Auckland) and the wife of Dr. Dihan Aponso. Palingu
intends to pursue a career in neuroscience research in the future.

Troops raid enemy bunker
Army elite troops raided an enemy bunker three Km east of
Vidattaltivu yesterday morning. According to information, troops
attacked an enemy bunker around 9.20 a.m and ground troops confirmed
that at least four terrorists were killed in the attack.
Maldives looks forward to Summit
Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom while accepting the
invitation from Sri Lanka to attend the forthcoming Summit meeting in
Colombo said that the Maldives is looking forward to participate in the
event as the country celebrates its 60th anniversary of independence.
Saudi Arabia donates dates
Saudi Arabia will donate 200 metric tons of dates to the Muslims of
Sri Lanka during Ramadan, according to the Saudi Foreign Ministry. KSA
Ambassador in Sri Lanka Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman Al-Jammaz would soon
hand over the consignment of dates to Minister A.H.M. Fowzie.
Guidelines for mobile phones
The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) has issued a new
set of guidelines in using mobile and CDMA phones. This step was taken to avert irregularities and illegal activities
while minimising threats to national security created by the
irresponsible use of telephones.
AI condems K'gama attack

The global human rights watchdog Amnesty International (AI) condemned
the suspected Tamil Tiger attack on civilian bus passengers in
Kataragama on Friday. "These indiscriminate attacks are brutal.
The victims are overwhelmingly people who are trying to go about
their everyday lives, living in fear of attacks at any time, with the
added untold suffering this brings to their relatives.
