Conference on Maritime Labour Convention
The ILO Colombo Office in collaboration with the ILO’s International
Labour Standards Department in Geneva and the Ministry of Labour
Relations and Manpower has organised a national conference on the
Maritime Labour Convention and the Seafarers’ Identity Documents
Convention (Revised), 2003 (No. 185) in Colombo from August 6 to 8.
The conference will pave way for Sri Lanka to draw up a National Plan
of Action that would enable the ratification of the said Conventions.
Tine Staermose, Director ILO Colombo said that Sri Lanka would be one
of the first nations in South Asia if they are to ratify the Convention
upon agreement by the government of Sri Lanka and the social partners.
This would establish the practice of integrating decent working
conditions and other benefits to be reaped by the social partners.
In February 2006, the 94th (Maritime) Session of the International
Labour Conference, the legislative body of the International Labour
Organisation (ILO) overwhelmingly adopted the Maritime Labour
Convention, 2006 (MLC) a comprehensive new labour standard for the
world’s maritime sector.
