Three women Probationary Assistant Superintendents of Police have
been recruited along with 15 male officers after a competitive
examination conducted by the Department of Examinations in November
2007.
This was the first time in the history of the Police Department where
women graduate Probationary Assistant Superintendents (P/ASPs) have been
directly recruited to the Police Department, Secretary to the National
Police Commission (NPC) L.C. Logeswaran said. Although women were
recruited in the past to other ranks such as Police Constables and
Sub-Inspectors, no women gazetted officer was recruited directly to the
Probationary Assistant Superintendent rank.
There have been instances where women from lower ranks have been
promoted as ASPs and SSPs in the past. However, with the expansion of
the police, the need arose to recruit women P/ASPs to man specialised
branches such as the Women and Child Protection Bureau.
The new women P/ASPs will perform multi functional duties hitherto
performed by their male counterparts. The competitive examination for
the direct recruitment of ASPs was held after a lapse of seven years.
For the first time an endurance test was conducted by the Police
Department to judge the suitability of the candidates.
The three women P/ASPs are Ms. H.W.I.S. Muthumala, P.G.J.M. Ariyasena,
and H.M.L.R. Amarasena. The men P/ASPs are P.A.B.N. Pallearachchi, M.L.D.
