Another 100 lorry loads of essential food items will be sent to Mannar, Vavuniya, Mulativu and Killinochchi this month, Disaster Relief Services Minister Rishad Bathiudeen told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

He said the food items included dhal, flour, sugar, cooking oil and rice. Fifty one food convoys were sent to the Wanni district on Thursday.

"Although we sent sixty lorries with essential food items to Wanni following a request made by the United Nations World Food Programme, few lorries were held at the Omanthai security checkpoint due to security reasons," he said. He said his Ministry had taken steps to send the food items to the Wanni district after obtaining permission from the security officers. The Minister also informed the security personnel and authorised persons to supervise the distribution of food items to ensure it reached the destination.

Minister Bathiudeen also confirmed that in addition to food supplies, steps had been taken to provide shelter to those who had come to the Wanni district.
