Uninterrupted power for Jaffna
The Power and Energy Ministry said the Jaffna peninsula will receive
an uninterrupted power supply from November following the completion of
the 36 MW thermal power plant in Chunnakam. A Ministry spokesman said
construction work is nearing completion and the power station will begin
operations in early November.
Stock market stronger
The stock market ended stronger concluding the week's trading. The
week displayed somewhat of a balanced context with indices losing ground
earlier in the week and gaining some of the lost momentum in the latter
part.
Focus on ME tourists
Citizens and expatriates from Saudi Arabia have been increasingly
visiting or travelling through Sri Lanka. There has been a 30 per cent
increase in tourist and business traffic from Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka
will focus more on Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Middle East as they
have a great spending capacity, especially in the wake of the economic
boom, This year alone, from January to date, 5,000 Saudis and 10,000
expatriates from the Kingdom visited Sri Lanka.
LTTE strongholds attacked
The Army attacked three strongholds of the LTTE in Pandiveddikulam in
Kilinochchi. The armed forces took over the three targets after the
attacks, said the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS).
Confrontations took place between the LTTE and the Military forces
throughout Friday in Vavuniya, Kilinochchi and Welioya.
Agreements with BOI
The Board of Investment (BOI) entered into agreements with Eagle
Power and Ithopa Super Trust. Small scale power projects will be set up
and seed potato cultivation will also be undertaken. The hydro power
project carried out by Eagle Power (Pvt) Limited will set up three small
scale power plants at Maduru Oya, Sudu Ganga and Kala Wewa.
