Badulla District - Veterans soccer champs

SOCCER: Badulla District Veterans team lifted the title when they scored a close 1-nil win over Princess Veterans, Maligawatte Side in the final of the Over 40 Soccer Tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Soccer Masters Association and sponsored by Tilak Peiris played at St. Benedict’s College grounds, Kotahena yesterday.

In evenly contested game, both sides attacked and counter attacked but drew a blank score sheet in the first half. After the breather the two teams lost equal opportunities of hitting net due to poor shooting. However in the 26th minute of the second half K. P. Keerthiratne after collecting a regular pass and went solo to net a neat goal hitting in the left corner of the goal.

M. T. M. Farook of Princess Veterans, Maligawatte was selected the best player while J. A. Faluloon of Badulla District Veterans was adjudged the best goal keeper.

Rev. Bro. Granville Perera, Director of St. Benedict’s College and President of the Schools Football Association was the chief guest.
