Dear soldier

My country is first,
My life is the next.
This is how you think
My dear, soldier brother

I salute you.
For your boldness.
You fight and die for us.
So I am indebted to you.

Come back like a hero,
From the field you fight,
Bring peace for my land,
Dear, this garland of love,
Will be yours,
Forever.

M.A. Seneviratne

Soldier's mission

The sunrise and the sunset
Beyond the palmyrah trees
Make no difference;
The smoky sky filled
With sounds of guns,
Avoid the brain faculties
To compose a few lines
In a meaningful order.

The uniform constantly cries
Asking for a change,
The gun angrily shouts
Asking for an interval,
The boots helplessly weep
Over the rotten smell of socks,
The angel of sleep and rest
I haven't seen for ages.

Yet, dear mum, I'm not worried,
And you must shed tears of joy
As your son being in the jaw of hell
Marches forward fearlessly
To help all Sri Lankans to see
The sun of peace rising
Over the mountains of hope
To live in peace and harmony!

(Dedicated to Nation's Heroes who captured Pooneryn)

Farewell to hero

Farewell General - we knew well.
Though never met - till the time you fell
Not on the field - you did belong
Not among the men - who fought side along.
The heart burns - for others laid in vain
The war wasn't - in their smallest of vein
But a hero - you were true to the word
Many a battle won - sending the enemy to sword
You be remembered - fighting war for peace
May light fall - on those unaware who the enemy is!

- Jayadeva Mayadunne

A tribute to a Hero

(In memory of Lt. Colonel Anuruddha Ranasingha)

A proud galaxy
Of seven stars,
With the Sun and the Moon
Lost one brilliant star.
Not at night,
But in the morning.

Oh! A real lion at war.
The smartest of the seven.
The handsomest and gentle,
With a smile every while,
Brought tears to every smile.

Born as a prince,
Lived as a man,
And died as a 'Lion',
For the sake of the land.

The march and the carriage,
Took you in charge,
With the mourning melody,
Towards the resting place.

The solitary yard,
In the mountain side
Was dark and breezy with,
Weeping hearts.

We covered your cradle
Not with soil.
But with tears,
And laid you in,
Mother earth's lap.

Oh! My brother dearest,
Have a rest complete,
No more duties North and East,
No coverings and no firings,
Time has come to depart,
Honourable Sir, Good Bye!!

Mangalika Ranasingha

Our heroes

We have a night with sweet dreams
You have a dream without such nights
Although we sleep, you never close your eyes even a second
For the sake of our lives
The terrorists are rampaging at this moment
But I know that
You never allow them to achieve their sinister objectives

My dear brothers and sisters,
You are the people who give us a life
Don't think that you are alone
Always we are behind you in the battle field too...
So my dears,
Let's go together to protect our motherland
With the Buddha's blessing!
