North - South :
Axis of Evil
From the News Desk
LTTE Political Wing Chief Nadesan in an interview with the media last
Wednesday is reported to have said that the LTTE would target
strategically important economic targets in the South in an effort to
disperse the Security forces and ease the pressure on them.
He is also reported to have told the BBC that even if Kilinochchi
falls they would continue fighting. Political analysts are of the
opinion that the LTTE facing certain defeat at the hands of the security
forces would shift their main strategy to economic sabotage.
The LTTE have attacked strategic economic targets such as the
Katunayake International Airport, the Central Bank, the Petroleum
Complex at Kolonnawa during the nearly three decade-old war with the
Government. It was in this context that President Mahinda Rajapaksa
yesterday warned that malicious elements that depend on the LTTE for
survival have already begun to create political unrest by creating many
problems for the Government.
Speaking in the same vein a few days ago, the Prime Minister
Ratnasiri Wickremanayake also warned of a conspiracy to undermine state
revenue
Meanwhile, Opposition forces in the South are conducting a parallel
campaign to undermine the economy through various means and cause panic
among the population in an attempt to destabilise the Government.
This includes attempts to make the country ungovernable. |
