First fish processing centre at Mutwal

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in collaboration with the Ceylon Fisheries Harbour Corporation launched the country's first fish processing centre at Modera Mutwal Fisheries harbour recently.

The objectives of the project are to encourage local fish exporters, reduce post-harvest waste, export high quality fish and enhance the income of the ceylon fisheries harbour corporation.

The Fish Processing Centre has been leased out to four foreign shipping companies and a deposit of Rs. 1.2 million have been obtained from each company.

The Ministry has allocated Rs. 2.9 million for the project which will commence islandwide.
