Visiting Japanese special peace envoy, Yasushi Akashi was happy over
the Government’s successful military operation to end terrorism and
expressed the support of his government, Foreign Secretary Dr. Palitha
Kohana told the “Sunday Observer”.
They also understood the fact the Sri Lankan government was doing
everything possible to handle the problem of Internally Displaced
Persons (IDPs) and appreciated that adequate quantities of food supplies
have been sent to them. The envoy also assured of Japan’s continued
cooperation to the government towards developing the areas that have
been liberated from the LTTE, the Foreign Secretary quoted Akashi as
saying further, during his meetings with the Foreign Minister.
Akashi expressed satisfaction at the efforts undertaken by the Sri
Lankan Government to safeguard the civilian population and expressed his
confidence in the All Party Representative Committee (APRC) as a viable
mechanism through which to bring about devolution of power and to build
a pluralistic Sri Lankan society, according to a media release issued by
the Foreign Ministry.
He stated that Japan was fully conscious of the Sri Lanka
government’s commitment to finding a political solution to the conflict,
and expressed the hope that the political process would continue, it has
