New unit to treat alcoholics

A new unit has been set up at the Deniyaya General Hospital to treat
alcoholics in the area, informed sources said. The new unit was set up
in accordance with the details provided by the Estate Development
Association of Deniyaya on the problems and diseases associated with the
use of alcohol, sources said.
A recent survey conducted in Deniyaya revealed that a large number of
estate workers have become addict to alcohol and remained a burden to
the society, sources added.
Rev. Michael Rajendran, a member of the Estate Development
Association of Deniyaya said, that the new unit at the Deniyaya hospital
will play an important role in treating alcohol addicts.
He also said that the new unit will provide a lead in opening such
units in other parts of the upcountry, where alcohol related diseases
and social problems were on the rise in recent years.
