New unit to treat alcoholics

A new unit has been set up at the Deniyaya General Hospital to treat alcoholics in the area, informed sources said. The new unit was set up in accordance with the details provided by the Estate Development Association of Deniyaya on the problems and diseases associated with the use of alcohol, sources said.

A recent survey conducted in Deniyaya revealed that a large number of estate workers have become addict to alcohol and remained a burden to the society, sources added.

Rev. Michael Rajendran, a member of the Estate Development Association of Deniyaya said, that the new unit at the Deniyaya hospital will play an important role in treating alcohol addicts.

He also said that the new unit will provide a lead in opening such units in other parts of the upcountry, where alcohol related diseases and social problems were on the rise in recent years.
