Gurugal Scheme benefits 2,600 farmers

Work on the Gurugal Oya Irrigation Scheme to benefit 2600 farmers in Deltota, Kandy district started recently. It is to be completed in 2013 and will cost 400 million rupees.

An anicut across Gurugal Oya will be built by the Irrigation Department fifty metres upstream of the existing Murapola Ela irrigation scheme built over 60 years back Irrigation Engineer Kandy district, Kumudunie Dheera said.

The Minister of Irrigation and Water Management Chamal Rajapaksa laid the foundation stone of the scheme that will irrigate a large extent of paddy land in the area.

A bridge over the anicut linking the Kandy district with the Nuwara Eliya district will also be built by the Road Development Authority to facilitate the movement of traffic between the two districts to help about 5,000 families living on either side of the waterway, she also said.
