Ananda in record 12th victory for the season

CRICKET: Ananda College, Colombo beat more fancied St. Sebastian’s College by 10 wickets in their inter-school under-19 cricket tournament match which ended at 2 p.m. at Moratuwa.

Thereby the Anandians set a new record in school cricket by registering their 12th outright victory for the season and surpassed the record held by Moratu Vidyalaya who had eleven victories in 1994/95 season under the leadership of Suranga Fernando and coached by the former Cambrian Bandula de Silva.

Anandians recorded this feat by beating a Moratuwa School and erasing a record held by yet another Moratuwa School whose past cricketer Lucky Rogers coached the present Anandian team.

Resuming at 117 for 4 Sebs were all out for 166 runs resistance coming only from the bat of debutant Brian Paul who had a patient knock of 30 runs which held the innings together.

Sachitra Perera claimed 5 for 61 for the visitors. Following on Sebs collapsed for 136 runs with Deshan Dias scoring a fighting knock of 65 runs. Matheesa Perera ripped through the homesters batting line up with 6 for 49 and Anandians notched up the required runs for no loss.

St. Sebastian’s: 117 for 4 overnight all out 166 (Brian Paul 30, Sachitra Perera 5 for 61, Matheesha Perera 3 for 42) and 136 (Deshan Dias 65, Ramesh Fernando 20, Matheesha Perera 6 for 49, Sachitra Perera 3 for 44.


Cambrians hang on grimly to force a draw

Set a victory target of 247 runs off 50 overs, Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa hung on grimly with a score of 175 for 8 in 49 overs to deny Royal College, Colombo of a possible victory in their drawn inter-school cricket encounter at Reid Avenue yesterday.

For the Cambrians, Isuru Thilina top-scored in their second essay with 65 while spinner Maneesha Thanthirigoda bowled best for Royal to return figures of 4 for 37.

Earlier, prolific run getter Kithruwan Vithanage cracked an unbeaten 101 while passing the milestone of 1,000 runs for the season as Royal made an impressive 207 for 1 in their second turn at the crease before the visitors managed to escape with a draw in fading light.

Vithanage’s knock was spiced with 10 boundaries and two sixes and came off only 109 deliveries while Kusal Perera gave him fine support with an unbeaten 72.

Prince of Wales: 135-9 wkts contd. 178 all out (Dilan Chandima 39, M. Hazim 39, Charutha Rajaratne 5-42, Lakshan Landewela 2-9) and 175 for 8 wkts at close (I. Thilina 65, Maneesha Thanthirigoda 4-37, Charutha Rajaratne 3-27).

Superb double by Nipun in drawn game

A good all-round effort by Nalanda’s Nipun Karunanayake who struck a fine 70 and had a match bag of (5 for 79) was the main feature in the drawn Inter school cricket encounter between Nalanda and Wesley played at Campbell Park yesterday.

In reply to Wesley’s first innings total of 251 for 9 declared, Nalanda were 103 for 6 overnight and went on to pile up 302.

While Nipun Karunanayake top scored with 70 the rest of the top order rallied around him with contributions coming from the bats of Prashan Wickremasinghe (55), Sineth Gunawardena (61) and Adeesha Nanayakkara (29).

Wesley: 251 for 9 declared in 81 overs. (R. Suriyakumara 88, M.Pelige 33, Ashen Fonseka 29, Dinuk Jayasinghe 5 for 67, Nipun Karunanayake 2 for 65) and 103 for 6 at stumps (Pasan Samarasekera 20, Dulanjan Wijesinghe 19, Shanuka Jeevantha 20, Nipun Karunanayake 3 for 14, Dinuk Jayasinghe 3 for 29).

Nalanda: 101 for 3 overnight 302 ( Prashan Wickermasinghe 55, Adeesha Nanayakkara 29, Nipun Karunanayake 70, Dinuk Jayasinghe 20, Sineth Gunawrdena 61, Primesh Dasanayake 19, Ashen Fonseka 4 for 39).

Drawn match at Mount Lavinia

The Inter school cricket encounter between S.Thomas’ and Trinity ended in a draw at Mount Lavinia yesterday.

Trinity: 244 in 63.3 overs.(K.Wimalaweera 25, D.Weeraratne 38, D.Gangoda 36, F.Wijesuriya 36 n.o., R.Jaleel 22, M.Sajid 20, F.Saleem 4 for 44, R.Mathugama 2 for 44) and 92 for 4 declared (D.Ranasinghe 48, C.Pathirana 3 for 29).

S.Thomas’: (64 for 3 overnight) 158 (Faheem Salim 53, Lalindra Pieris 31, Dinesh Walpita 20, F.Wickrema 5 for 41, C.Gokula 2 for 12) and 38 for no loss (F. Saleem 17 n.o., A. Fernando 18 n.o.).

Peterites pile up 375 for 5

St.Peter’s went on a run scoring spree when they rattled up 375 for 5 declared on the first day in their Inter school cricket encounter against Revatha MV Balapitiya at Bambalapitiya yesterday.

St. Peter’s: 375 for 5 declared (Andre Berenger 64, Denam Perera 65, S.Ranasuriya 65, Angelo Emmanuel 38, Angelo Perera 25, Chatura Pieris 42 n.o., Vinod Perera 52 n.o., Nimna de Silva 2 for 78).

Revatha MV: 74 (Yasodha Nayanajith 20, Vinod Perera 3 for 28, Angelo Perera 4 for 19).

Fine century by Priyasad

CRICKET: A fine 100 by J. Priyasad of President’s College, Rajagiriya was the highlight in their drawn Inter-school cricket match against D.S. Senanayake College played at Rajagiriya yesterday.

President’s College: 265 all out (J. Priyasad 100 n.o., A. Fernando 15, N. Kavikara 4 for 71, M. Gunasinghe 5 for 75) and 49 for 2 (Sagara Vimukthi 29, D. Perera 20 n.o.).

DS Senanayake: 252 (H. Udugamavithana 54, I. Anuradha 45, C. Wickremasinghe 34, N. Pathirana 51 n.o., C. Satharasinghe 42, M. Liyanapathirana 4 for 98, C. Wanniarachchi 3 for 30, S. Vimukthi 2 for 53).
