Thinking
about planes and flights and whether there were beautiful stewardesses,
it was quite a grand opening on Friday when it went on boards at the
Wendt revealing. `Boeing Boeing’.
A production by Jehan Bastians, Neidra Williams and Miranga
Ariyaratne was a rib-tickling, bright-witted and interesting drama that
gave theatergoers a reason to talk about over the weekend. The raw
script with the character chemistry really spruced the play up but
moreover, it was the chanter and banter that made it a wonderful
production.
Trying to manage three relationships is a tough issue but not for
Bernard who started with three fiancees who are stewardesses.
One, a feisty American, the other a soft-spoken German and the third
is a darling French lass having names starting with the lovely letter
`J’ where the audience meets Judith, Jackeline and Janet, the terrific
three who called Bernard their soon-to-be-hubby!
`Boeing Boeing’ starts with music where Bernard is having breakfast
with Janet but she is not in good terms with faithful housekeeper
Bertha. Soon after Robert Long, a long-lost friend of Bernard’s comes
into the scene. But Long tries to understand Bernard’s plight by saying
that he can’t manage it.
“Long, it’s all about organization and finding the right girlfriend
on schedule as she gets off her flight and when the next one comes, all
very well planned,” says Bernard.
However,
long and Bertha don’t agree with the run of things because they do the
hectic work of changing photographs, making the meals and Long
entertaining the ladies and making excuses for why Bernie boy isn’t
there. The `scheduled’ relationships Bernard has with these three
stewardesses make it all the more fun because the best is yet to come.
After panicking the new flight system has been changed so that the
stewardesses can adjust time for Bernard, he is ultimately lost at one
point, all three are in the house. When one door opens, the other doors
close but when there are three, how is that to be managed?
Whatever the consequences, the action, the drama and the trauma made
it a wonderful drama and we are happy that things did turn out for the
best. Bertha got a raise in her salary because as Bernard put it `she
was indispensable’ and the single Long found love in German Judith’s
arms, Bernard got the lady he `adored’ and lucky boy, a French maiden.
Janet went to Mexico where she would be living like a millionaire by
now. All’s well that ends well!
