Jumbo mischief!

Peeping into the temple

Being fed

Chief priest! Chief priest!
I'm here once again
Is there anything for me to eat?
I'm sick of chewing leaves all day
So, I stole away from the herd
To beg for some yummy food
Because I know you love me a lot.

This seems to be what the mischievous baby elephant pictured here has managed to convey to the Chief Incumbent of the Sithulpauwa Raja Maha Viharaya, Ven. Metaramba Hemarathana Thera.

He claims that this baby elephant from the Yala Sanctuary sneaks into the temple compound in search of food, four times a day. On some days the elephant becomes very naughty and ends up being caned by the chief priest, who is very attached to it.

Do you know what this naughty but lovable baby elephant had done one day? It had sneaked into the store house of the temple and got at a sack of flour! The chief priest and the others in the temple had been taken aback to see flour scattered all over the yard, and the baby elephant covered in flour, trying to consume the flour along with the sack. What pandemonium this naughty little giant of the jungle had caused that day!
