Joe-Pete ends in a tame draw

CRICKET: Besides a few individual batting performances by batsmen of either side nothing spectacular occurred in the 75th 'Battle of The Saints' cricket encounter which ended in a draw at the P. Sara Stadium yesterday.

The Josephian vice captain Hareen Silva had a memorable match as he re-wrote the record books by scoring 141 n.o. to top the Joes batting list in the 'big match' series. He followed up with another unbeaten 56 in the second innings while his side was in pursuit of 193 runs for a win off 38 overs.

The first Innings of the match was curtailed to 60 overs per side and the Peterites were all out for 235 in 55.5 overs. The Joes in reply were 188 for 5 overnight with 11 overs of their stipulated 60 overs remaining. The overnight unbeatens Hareen Silva (98) and Shalindra Perera (13) batted exceptionally well to add 103 for the sixth wicket off 110 deliveries with Hareen Silva compiling a well struck 141 n.o. with 18 fours facing 166 deliveries. He was ably supported by Shalindra Perera who hit a valuable unbeaten 41 when the declaration came.

The Peterites going in for the second time with a deficit of 23 runs were helped by two useful innings by Andri Berenger (56) facing 95 deliveries with five fours and left hander Chatura Pieris who proved his all-round capabilities with a steady 78 off 64 balls including seven fours and three sixers. Pieris arrived at the crease with both Berenger and Angelo Perera dismissed at 107 for 5 and in a spot of bother. The Peterite's closed their innings at 215 for 9 declared, and set a victory target of 193 off 38 overs. The Joes were 113 for 5 at close with Hareen Silva 56 n.o and Chatura Kumara 26 n.o.

The following awards were also presented. Best All-rounder: Chatura Pieris (St.Peter's). Man of the Match and Best Batsman: Hareen Silva (St.Joseph's). Best Bowler: Dinal Dhambarage (St.Joseph's). Best Fielder: Andri Berenger (St.Peter's)
