80th Battle of the Maroons :

Anandians fight-back

On a day dominated by bowlers of both sides Nalanda College chasing Ananda's first-innings below-par total of 140 all out, were 99 for 7 by stumps on the opening day of their 80th Battle of the Maroons big-match begun at the SSC grounds yesterday.

A total of 17 wickets crashed on day one for the addition of only 239 runs on what initially promised to be an ideal surface for batting with Nalanda Skipper and right-arm leg spinner Nipun Karunanayake claiming outstanding figures of 6-30 while for Ananda leg-spinner Sachithra Perera too impressed with analysis of 3-27.

For Ananda opener Prabodha Senevirathne top-scored with 46 while for Nalanda likewise opener P. Wickremasinghe was the top-scorer with 29.

Ananda who were one of the form sides of the inter-school season were never allowed to settle down after being inserted in by Nalanda and the former lost wickets at regular intervals before being shot out for a modest first-innings score.

However, Nalanda were soon to find out that run-making was not going to be an easy task and that too when pitted against a potent bowling attack and by the close the lads from Campbell Place were still 41 runs adrift of their opponent's total with three first-innings wickets in hand.

Going by the turn of events on day one, the match should be poised for an interesting finish later today but any analyst's smart money would on for a draw.
