Mega industrial drive in Eastern provice

A group of 25 industrialists had confirmed their willingness to set
up industries in the Eastern Province to the Ministry of Industrial
Development.
They will set up industries in the Trincomalee and Batticaloa
districts.Secretary to the Ministry of Industrial Development R.V.D.
Piyatilake said that the proposed industries are cement, plastics,
leather, salt, dairy, steel, hardware and agro based industries.
An investment promotion meeting chaired by the Minister of Industrial
Development Kumara Welgama was held recently at the Ministry with the
participation of 125 leading industrialists.
The Secretary said at the initial stage, the Ministry had decided to
invest Rs. 1 billion to develop the infrastructure facilities in the
area for the convenience of the industrialists.
A high powered team of government officials with the industrialists
will visit Trincoamlee and Batticaloa next week to finalise the
selection of sites.
A co-ordinating office for industrialists had already been set up at
the Trincomalee Kachcheri and another two offices will be set up in the
Industrial Development Ministry and Batticaloa Kachcheri shortly, the
Secretary said.
A twenty five acre industrial zone had been set up in Trincoamlee
with electricity, telecommunication and road transport facilities.
According to the Secretary another industrial zone will be developed
in the Batticaloa district shortly.
