News In brief

Giving way for vehicle owners

Rapid urbanisation had not only eaten into the nature’s blessings like trees, valuable waterways and clean air but also had destroyed certain buildings of historical or national value.

One of our readers, Vijitha Basnayaka has sent in the story of the proposed vehicle park at Alfred Place, Colombo, that would demolish a model architectural residence, Ena de Silva House designed by the eminent architect of yesteryear Geoffrey Bawa somewhere between 1960-1962.

Ena de Silva ran her gallery of batiks with artists like Lucky Senanayake designing some of the best in this house that had the traditional courtyard of Sri Lankan houses during those years when the environment of Colombo was tranquil and healthy. Ena de Silva house is to be demolished to make way for a car park our reader writes.
