A MAN has survived being swept over Niagara Falls and spending 40 minutes in near-freezing waters last week.

A tourist saw the man, believed to be in his 30s or 40s, jump the fence and dive into the river that separates the US and Canada, The Buffalo News reports.

After surviving the 54m fall the man clung to a log but could not get to shore as currents swept him around in circles. The man reportedly refused to co-operate with rescuers so a helicopter circled above him and used the wind generated by its blades to push him to shore. The man was taken to hospital with a head injury and possible hypothermia.

“It’s pretty remarkable really that he could survive in the icy waters, especially after going over the falls,” Niagara Parks Police Chief Doug W. Kane told The Buffalo News. “To survive that long in the icy waters is almost unheard of.”

Niagara Falls is made up of three falls, the American Falls, Horseshoe Falls and Bridal Veil Falls and separates the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of New York.

The man plunged over the Horseshoe Falls and entered the Niagara River on the Canadian side of the border.

There could only ever be one winner in this battle between a 4.5 m saltwater crocodile and a bite-size shark. The croc went head-to-head with the shark last week only metres from a boatload of surprised fishermen. Craig Van Lawick was aboard the commercial barramundi vessel on the Wildman River 100km east of Darwin when the croc started devouring the one-metre shark, The Northern Territory News (Australia) reports.

“There was not a whole lot of sound,” he said.

“All we could hear was the crunching sound.”

Van Lawick was unsure about the type of shark involved and said it was eaten too quickly to work it out. Luckily another fisherman on board, Anthony Capogreco, reached for his camera and captured the animals in their brief but dramatic battle.
