Thoughts of an abandoned child

Though millions of people live in the world,
I have no parents, siblings or relations
I feel alone in the world
With no friends nor anyone else,
There was no one to look after me
And still not
Only my heart and shadow,
I have nowhere to call my own
No food to sate my hunger,
Never have I been called with sweet words
Nor have I been loved,
When I go to people needing a hand
They simply chase me away,
I suppose that's because
I'm neither wealthy nor healthy
And am forsaken too,
But I've got a question in my little mind...
Will I be alone forever?

Ann Nisansala Fernando

For the best mother ever

To one who bears the sweetest name
And adds a luster to the same
Who shares my joys
Who cheers me when sad
The greatest friend I ever had
Long life to her
For there's no other
Who can take the place of my
Dear Mother

Spring

Amber rose sun rises beyond the misty blue mountains
Early morning dew drops moisten manicured gardens
Black birds sweetly twitter melodious tunes of morning
Colourful butterflies freely float over newly budding trees

Golden daylight eventually falls through misty curtains
Herds of cows ascend to green pastures in high mountains
Streams of glacier water gently flow into turquoise lakes
Flocks of swans gracefully swim near moss covered banks
Humming honey bees swiftly fly around flower decked meadow

Crocuses of spring beautifully bloom in white yellow and purple
Violet coloured Hyacinths spread intensive fragrances in the air
Red winged ladybirds quietly crawl up into blossoming flowers
Timid long eared hares quickly hop into a dark wild wood
Dappled mushrooms grow rapidly under the shades of trees
Lemony scented Magnolia petals flutter as fresh breezes blow
Springtime Daffodils dangle decorating the bloomy gardens

Time - Friend or foe?

I often used to wonder
With my young eyes open wide
What a vast place this world is
And so wonderful to live in

The sunny days lingered on
While birds sang forever
Clouds floated across the blue skies
Over green hills and meadows

Under the shade of a rustling tree
I have seen strange flowers bloom
The ups and downs of an ant's life
Have touched the golden grains of rice

Gazed at the brilliant colours at dusk
Curled up in my bed at night
While nightingales sang sweetly outside
Watched the million stars shine bright

Clocks hardly ticked
Time almost stood still
As the days rolled into years
The hands of the clock took flight

Shoulder to shoulder I ran with time
Driven by the desire of following suit
Until it disappeared in the horizon
Thus began a life of mere existence

The things I had loved as a child
Blurred together and disappeared
Closed around me like a thick fog
The world shrank before my very eyes

Still, in my constant flight
Towards a destination unknown
If stopped to look around me
In a snatched moment I see

That flowers bloom as before
And birds sing as sweet!

*Blank Poem*

Sitting at my desk,
Cluttered with piles of papers,
And half-read books,
I keep my pen poised,
And scribble thoughtfully,
Down a blank half-sheet.

I write about a dream,
A blank dream,
A dream that won`t come true,
A dream that`s certain,
To disappoint me.

But these lines I keep penning,
With a hope,
A blank hope,
For, I still wait for the unchangeable,
To change,

And the impossible to happen!

We are not us

O, Murugan,
Is this further punishment for our past sins;
To have to yield to the orders of the gunpoint;
To be herded to and fro like cattle;
To be deprived of the freedom of living our own lives;
To starve for days and keep crying in utter desperation;
To be separated from our immediate kith and kin;
To be so miserable for which there seems no valid reason?

O, Murugan,
Forgive us once and for all since we are innocent.
Please, let us be content with what we have!
We don't ask for a heaven,
But our own house and home!

O, Murugan!
Let us be ourselves again!
