KUC launch compost project
by Rohana JAYALAL
The Kesbewa Urban Council (KUC) has made arrangements to launch a
special compost fertiliser project in the area, using garbage
accumulated in the public market and in town and villages in the area.
As a first step of this project the KUC has provided garbage and
compost bins for 1,000 families in Bangalawaththa and Rathmaldeniya
areas. The KUC would provide these bins to all families in the area.
The objective of launching this project is to produce cheap
fertiliser and to keep the area free of garbage.
This project launched according to the concept of the chairman of
Kesbewa Urban Council Leonard Karunarathne and under the development
program of KUC and supervision of the Chairman Karunarathne.
The Council common fund finances the project. The Central
Environmental Authority (CEA) will also assist the KUC to carry out the
project.
The KUC will extend this to other KUC areas. The public is required
to collect plastic and paper waste and hand them over to garbage
purchasing centres set up in the area.
The public may also purchase a compost bin from the KUC, said
Chairman Karunarathne.
