Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva

Members of the Official and Unofficial Bar bid farewell to Chief Justice Sarath Nanda Silva PC, who is due to retire today, after delivering the landmark judgement in two Fundamental Right cases on the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, heard before the Supreme Court.

Justice Nimal Gamini Amaratunga read out the eighty-page judgement for over three hours. Associated on the Bench were Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva PC and Justice K. Sripavan.

Deputy Solicitor General Ms. Bimba Jayasinghe Tillekeratne from the Official Bar and President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva of the Unofficial Bar paid tribute to the Chief Justice.

The independence of the Judiciary was felt far and wide across the country where the common man was made aware that he could turn to the judiciary for justice and that he need not suffer in silence, he said.

The powerful and the mighty were made aware that they too were subject to the laws of the country.

The Chief Justice replying to Deputy Solicitor General Ms. Bimba Jayasinghe Tillekeratne and President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva wished them all success in the future.

The Chief Justice thanked all junior and senior lawyers who appeared before the Supreme Court and wished them well.
