The song `You Are My Destiny’ could aptly be applied to the leading accomplished singer Maxie Rozairo, if we change the destiny around to music. Now a freelance performer he is finding himself on stage more often than he thought, entertaining audiences with that well controlled voice of his that gave pleasure to many at home and also abroad.

On June 28 he is billed to perform at another of Imran Packir Saibo’s shows. From a trainee `export’ clerk Maxie left behind him figures and account books and kangarooed to become the recognised singer he is today. When we met up with him after a performance he was happy to tell us that having seen the scene around him especially that of the young singers he has decided to help them to improve themselves, as a service to them.

“I’ve been judging many singing competitions and karaoke competitions and I notice that at all these competitions the diction of the singers is poor. I’d like to train them to sing properly for a pop stage in order to make a good impact.

We know that stage behaviour is important, the way you hold the mike, the way you walk about on stage during the performance, the dress, the grooming, the spoken English - most of them are shy. I want to make them get over that feeling and improve themselves” revealed Maxie. It’s wonderful that Maxie has come forward to be of service to the youth. E-mail him at [email protected].

A spool back into Maxie’s singing career would be immense but briefly his forte is the intricate songs from the Motown world, the wide repertoire of Stevie Wonder, Elton John and his tour de force being James Ingram’s `Just Once’. Of course, you cannot move on without mentioning his admirable renditions of Bridge Over Troubled Water which was his anthem in his early years.

His career kicked off with Sound Waves, then shifted to the Fireflies and after that he switched to the Spitfires when the group was in the Middle East performing for six years. Back home he had happy memories with his band Mahogany which he considers to be his halcyon days. Of course the lobby days with Diliup Gabadamudalige was also memorable and the many times I performed in

Australia and for concerts and corporate shows at home. Yes if I could live it all over again I would do it” comments Maxie who has now commenced a worthy cause to help young singers to transform themselves into professional performers.
