The Gajaba Regiment (GR) of the Army goes down in the history of the Sri Lanka Army as the Regiment which produced the majority of Wanni field Commanders who led a successful battle to wipe out LTTE terrorism from the country.

The triumph fittingly by coincided with their Silver Jubilee celebrations with the Regiment honouring the top-most administrator in the defence field, the Defence Secretary, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa who was a former Gajaba Regiment infantryman at a ceremony held at Regimental Headquarters at Saliyapura, Anuradhapura last Friday.

Rajapaksa, who placed floral bouquets at the foot of the marble War Hero monument at the entrance to the GR Headquarters, also paid tribute to Maj. Gen. Wijaya Wimalarathne, the architect of the GR and its first Commanding Officer.

Maj. Gen. Jagath Dias, GOC 57 Division, Maj. Gen. Kamal Gunarathna GOC 53 Division, Brig. Chagie Gallage GOC 59 Division, Brig. Shavendra Silva, GOC 58 Division, GR Commandant and other GR senior and junior officers joined in welcoming the Defence Secretary who was a tower of strength in the historic military victory over terrorism.
