All island hockey tourney

The annual all island boys girls Under 15 hockey tournament organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association will be worked off at Edward Park and Nandimithra Ekanayake Stadium in Matale from June 7 to June 14. The finals will be played on Sunday June 14 from 2.00 p.m. onwards at the Nandimithra Ekanayake Stadium.

Over 60 schools will be seen in action in this hockey tournament.


Sivasothy no more

Senior cricket umpire S. Sivasothy died under tragic circumstances on Friday when he was knocked down by a motor cyclist while riding his push cycle at Kinross Avenue.

He was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit, but succumbed to his head injuries.

58-year-old Sivasothy was the current Assistant Treasurer of the Association of Cricket Umpires And Scorers and worked tirelessly to uplift the standard of umpiring. The late Sivasothy was a grade one umpire and a panel one Sara Trophy umpire. He was an old boy of Jaffna Central College, and represented his school as a left arm leg spinner.

His mortal remains lie at the Mahinda Funeral Parlour, Mount Lavinia and will be cremated on Monday (Tomorrow) at the General Cemetery. Mount Lavinia. (RA)


Isipathana dump Kingswood 25-19

Isipathana College created the major upset in the school under-20 President League Rugby Tournament up in Kandy yesterday. They brought the Kingswoodians unbeaten run to an end winning by 25 points (2 goals, 1 try, 1 penalty, 1 drop goal) to 19 points (2 goals, 1 try).

At half time the winners completely battled the Randles Hill school by 19-0.

Isipathana dished out the usual running rugby by their speedy three quarters. Though Kingswood came back strongly in the second half it was too late for the Randles Hill school.

Isipathana tries were scored by Vishwamithra Jayasinghe, Prashan Attanayake, Tharindu Siriwardena, Mohamed Jumad converted two of them and also put over a penalty. Prasad Devinda dropped a neat goal for Kingswood.

Full back Rajitha Sansoni, Roshan Weeraratne and prop M. Dharmawardena scored. Roshan Weeraratne converted two of them.

Kandy drub Police 67-16

Defending champions Kandy Sports Club went on the rampage as they outplayed Sri Lanka Police Sports Club by a massive 67 points to 16 points in their SLRFU Caltex inter club `A' division league rugby tournament first round fixture played at the Police Park yesterday.

Kandy SC completely dominated the proceedings as they collected their points from six goals and five tries after having led 29-10 at half time. Police SC responded with one goal and three penalties. (C.D).


Thomians rout Antonians

S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, edged out a vastly improved St. Anthony's College by 52 points (6 goals, 2 tries) to 25 points (1 goal, 3 tries, 1 penalty) at Nittawela yesterday.

At half time winners led 19-18. Referee: Aruna Rankothge.


Provincial Education Dept. - overall champs 81 points

SPORTS FESTIVAL: Central Provincial Education Department with 81 points won the overall championship at the Sports Festival held at various venues in Kandy.

The festival ended on Tuesday at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy. It was conducted by the Ministry of Sports and Industries of the Central Province. The sports festival consisted of soccer, cricket, elle, volleyball, netball and finally an athletic meet was held.

Overall Championships: 1. Department of Provincial Education 81 points, 2. Department of Local Government 77 points, 3. Department of Health 60 points.

Minister of Sports and Industries of Central Province B. Radhakrishnan was the chief guest.


Yatinuwara athletic champs with 51 points

ATHLETICS: Yatinuwara Provincial Secretariat team with 51 points came on top at the Inter-Provincial Secretariats Athletic Meet held at the Bogambara Stadium.

Gangawata Koralaya Provincial Secretariat came second with 50 points and Patha Dumbara Secretariat came third.

Seasons best by Matale Thomians

RUGBY: St. Thomas' College, Matale scored the season's highest when they trounced Sir John Kotalawala Maha Vidyalaya, Kurunegala by 98 points (4 goals, 14 tries) to nil in their schools under-20 rugby tournament match played at Bernard Aluwihara Stadium in Matale yesterday.

At half-time Thomians led 44-0. The match was played under heavy rain and though the ground conditions were wet and slippery the Thomians ran the ball well to score 18 tries against a feeble opposition.
