UNP’s standpoint on 13th Amendment
The main opposition UNP said it would extend its fullest support to
implement the 13th Amendment, if the proposals of the Amendment could
bring fruitful results to achieve a lasting solution to the present
crisis.
UNP front-liner Lakshman Seneviratne told the Sunday Observer
yesterday that the party had called upon the Government to reveal the
proposals of the 13th Amendment forthwith to enable the people in the
country to study it.
Seneviratne said his party also expressed concern over different
statements being made by the JHU and the Jathika Nidahas Peramuna which
are opposed to the implementation of the 13th Amendment. Another senior
UNP Parliamentarian said he himself and several other Government MPs
were personally against the granting of Police and Land powers to
Provincial Councils. When contacted JVP Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath,
said that his party does not want to implement the 13th Amendment in
full and expressed displeasure over the Police and Land powers being
given to Provincial Councils.
He said the LTTE no longer exists in the country and called upon the
Government to drop the matter of co-chairs. He also called upon the
Government to refrain from dealing with any country in terms of
co-chairs.
