Emphasis on study of English

Studying of English was stressed by the Resident Director of the
Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Joachim Sehlutter, at the Workshop on `The Role
of Local Bodies in Development of Tourism and Economic Development' held
at the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club Auditorium.
The West German Resident Director said that even recently President
Mahinda Rajapaksa has emphasised the need for the study of English
Language in the country, since English has become a link language in the
entire globe, therefore he requested those involved in the tourism trade
to equip themselves not only in English, but in other languages used all
over the world.
A number of officials from leading hotels, guest houses, tourist
guides, local bodies, government departments, senior police officers
attended the workshop.Sehlutter said that his organisation the Friedrich
Ebert Stiftung Foundation was committed to work on Social Democracy, on
Political Education, International Cooperation, Scholarship Programs,
Research and Consultation.

Veerasingam who spoke on the promotion of the Tourist Industry in Nuwara
Eliya said that it's a land of peace, and silence and the town is
decorated with buildings ranging in style from Georgian to Queen Anne,
Parks, Trout Streams, the Golf links, the historical clubs, and several
other natural resources, and they have to be carefully harnessed and
preserved.
A Senior Journalist and a Labour Consultant P. Rajaratnam who spoke
on Tourism Promotion and the history of Nuwara Eliya traced it from the
time as Nuwara Eliya was in 1819, when Dr. Davy a brother of the famous
Sir Nubrey Davy visited Nuwara Eliya on a hunting spree, how thereafter
Nuwara Eliya had been progressively developed into a tourist paradise of
international repute.
