Lankan contingent leaves for AY games

The Sri Lankan Youth Sports Stars who make their appearance at the inaugural Asian Youth Games will be marching with the latest costumes designed to give the Lankan cultural look. These youngsters will be hoping to make this opportunity as the base for their future careers to bring honour and glory to their motherland through these sporting disciplines.

The games are scheduled to commence with a colourful opening ceremony tomorrow.

The 30 member team of young boys and girls along with the officials headed by Nishantha Piyasena, the chef de mission of the Sri Lankan contingent, left the Island this morning with loads of hopes for better achievements to goal medals in this inaugural games, which is also the foundation for these youngsters.

The games, which the Singapore’s officials promise to be one of the best youth events the world has witnessed, will act as prior preparation ahead of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games which is planned to take place at the same venues which will be wed for the youth games.

Trinitian Heshan Unamboowe, being the most experienced campaigner in the Sri Lankan team, will be the top medal hope without any doubt.

Unamboowe with previous experience in international rena, will be looking forward to give his best for the country.

The Lankans will field to give an excellent show at Beach Volleyball as Sri Lanka will held two teams. This will be the first occasion that junior teams will represent Sri Lanka at this event.

“Though we are unable to assess the abilities of beach volleyballers from other countries, we are confident of our boys and girls at this games”, Stated Secretary, Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation Susil Ranasinghe. He also added that with the senior Beach Volleyballers who performed will to reach the 4th position at the recently concluded Asian Championships in Thailand and Bangladesh was a morale booster for the youngones.
