If you are interested in World War II history, then this is the movie
for you. You will love it more, if you are a fan of either Robert Taylor
or Eleanor Parker. Their acting was great in it. It was one of matinee
idol Robert Taylor's finest performances. (It doesn't hurt the picture,
that both Taylor and Parker were supposedly romantically involved while
working on the set.)
This film deals basically with the plan to bomb Japan, at tail-end of
World War II.
It takes you through behind the scenes operations of developing the
A-bomb and finally you are there in the plane, as the bomb is dropped on
Hiroshima, Japan. Real footage is blended into the movie to add more
authenticity to the story which is quite frankly based on actual
events.Robert Taylor plays Paul Tibbets who piloted the plane that
carried the A-bomb and Eleanor Parker plays his long suffering wife
Lucey Tibbets.
Even though some liberties are taken regarding Paul Tibbet's personal
life, you probably would not mind, as this makes the picture more
interesting and appealing.
Although, unaware of the full potential and impact of this new lethal
weapon, Col. Tibbets knows that it is capable of doing tremendously more
damage, than any other weapon used before in history, and that the death
toll resulting from it was enormous.
He is rather hesitant and reluctant at first to be the person, who
will end so many lives (by the millions), but if using it may bring an
end to the war, then not doing so may result in even more lives being
lost in continued ground assaults as the fighting goes on. At the same
time, the intense secrecy surrounding this entire mission, leaves him
with no one he can express his thoughts and doubts to, not even his
beloved wife Lucey.
As time goes on, the pressure upon him only increase.
