Tharean Kepas - a feminine attraction
In Malay culture they call it the Tharean Kepas - the fan dance that
is choreographed for more than six dancers. In fact we understand there
is no limit to the number of dancers. It could even be a twenty, forty
or even sixty.
It is a traditional dance of the Malays and was one of the dances
performed at the cultural song, dance and food festival held recently by
the Sri Lanka Malay Association in collaboration with the Galadari
Hotel. It is a welcome and celebration dance expressed in a feminine way
with the use of fans or scarves, little handkerchiefs or even attractive
umbrellas.
The steps the Malay Association proudly claims are those that Rufin
Saldin had introduced during his early years as a dancer and have been
passed down. Among the other dances was the Ronget danced by female and
male dancers to an uptempo beat similar to the ‘baila’. |
