Heshan, Miniruwani set new records

The national swimmers Heshan Unabmoowe of Trinity College and Miniruwani Samarakoon of Gateway International School, Kandy were the 'star' swimmers establishing eight new meet records between then at the national Age Group Swimming Championships held at the Sugathadasa Stadium pool yesterday.

This meet conducted by SLASU served as mandatory selection trial for Asian Age Group Championships to be held in Tokyo, Japan from August 9 to 13.

The under-19 champion swimmer Heshan who is in peak form set new meet records in the 200 metres Back Stroke - 2.12:40 secs; 100 Metres Butterfly stroke 59.87 secs 50 metres Back Stroke 28.02 secs, 100 metres Free Style-54.29 secs and 50 Metres Butterfly stroke.

Meanwhile Miniruwani accounted for three new meet records in the girls under-19 - 100 metres Butterfly Stroke - 1.10:53 secs, 50 metres Butterfly Stroke - 32.08 secs and 200 metres Butterfly Stroke - 2.38:37 secs. Akalanka Peiris of St. Peter's College had two records in the Boys Under-10 - 100 metres Butterfly Stroke - 1.00:00 secs and 50 metres Butterfly Stroke - 36.13 secs.` (L.F.)
