Votes gather momentum

The voting in the 31st Observer Mobitel Most Popular Cricketer of the Year 2009 started on a high note compared to previous years.

Voting was brisk in the first five weeks.

In the All-Island Contest Harith Jayampath of D. S. Senanayake College leads with 5,262 votes while another D. S. Senanayake College cricketer Naveen Kavikara is in second position with 4,764 votes. Peterite skipper Angelo Perera secured third place with 4.524 votes.

Krishan Wickremarachchi of Gamini MV, Bentota leads in the Outstation Contest with 6,298 votes, followed by S. H. Indunil Kumara of Devapathiraja Vidyalaya, Ratgama in second place with 3,764 votes and Shehan Silva of Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa third with 2,339 votes. Connecting the 30-year-old Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the year to the world is Sri Lanka's fastest growing mobile communication provider, Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel.

Mobitel is the third sponsor in the history of the Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year contest series after Warner-Hudnut and Bata.

Former Sri Lanka Test captain and present ICC Match Referee, Ranjan Madugalle won the Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the year 'crown' when Warner-Hudnet sponsored the inaugural event in 1979.

Mobitel as sponsor of the event would further strengthen the original show which has recognised schoolboy talent over the years. It will be SLT Mobitel that would provide that 'SMART' connection to the Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year Contest conducted by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited.
