Landslides kill 5 in Nepal
Five people died Friday in landslides in the mountains of western
Nepal. That raises the death toll to 43 after landslides and floods in
the monsoon season, officials said.
An additional 12 people are missing, including nine who are
unaccounted for after landslides in eastern Nepal, Home Ministry
official Ishwar Regmi told CNN.
The five deaths Friday happened in Syangja district, about 93 miles
(150 km) west of the capital Kathmandu, and the nine who are missing are
from Sankhuwasabha district, about 248 miles (400 km) east of the
capital.
About 30 people have died in landslides and floods in the past six
days, Regmi said.
Hundreds of people in different parts of the country have been
displaced by fear of landslides.
Landslides and floods are frequent during the monsoons in mountainous
Nepal, and the growing deforestation exacerbates the situation every
year.
The monsoon lasts in Nepal from mid-June to mid-September.
