ARPITEC introduces food-grade water pump
Exposure to lead can cause significant health problems, especially
for infants, children, and nursing mothers. The quality of our water
supply is often scrutinised for evidence of lead contamination but it is
just as important to examine the water distribution system inside our
own homes.
For the first time in Sri Lanka, Arpitec has introduced 100%
food-grade stainless steel water pumps manufactured by Arpico.
This new Arpitec water pump is built from a Number 306 stainless
steel, which has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration
for uses related to human consumption, instead of the brass that is
commonly used in water pumps currently on the market.
Many popular water pumps are built using brass impellers that can be
dangerous for your family's health. After some use, these brass
impellers, which can contain lead, may undergo a chemical reaction and
lead may leach into the water. With over 90% of the Sri Lankan
population using water pumps, the possibility of excessive lead exposure
has become a pressing public issue.
Adverse effects of lead poisoning include irreversible physical and
mental retardation in children, including deficits in attention span and
learning ability. Adults who drink water contaminated with lead may
suffer from kidney problems and high blood pressure.
Targeting the most vulnerable members of our society, lead
contamination has been highlighted as one of the most critical public
health problems in many other societies.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a US
government agency, lead can affect almost every organ and system in the
body [and] may cause anemia, a disorder of the blood [and] damage the
reproductive system in men.
