Is a woman necessarily a lady?

It was really shocking to hear what happened at the Hikkaduwa Beach Festival this year. Where has all the cultural values gone? What has happened to a woman’s dignity and self respect? This is totally unacceptable in a conservative country like Sri Lanka.

Why don’t some females understand the VALUE of being a woman? We speak of women’s rights and liberty. Is dancing topless what “liberalizes” a woman? Which book of law says that?

A lady is a magnificent creation of the one above. She is the “gardener” of life. Risking her life at child birth and continuing to do so in nurturing her children into respectable individuals, makes her a guardian angel! Although roses, hearts, cupids are used as symbols of love, a lady is the spirit of love. It is through a lady that a man feels the love and comfort of his mother.

A woman can be compared to a flower that expresses her beauty, tenderness and love that makes her a “lady”. It’s pathetic that some or rather most women at present don’t realize this.

What has caused such drastic changes in this society? Our ancestors were wise, in saying; a woman belongs in the kitchen. It could be the excess freedom given in the “modern” era that gives her the audacity to go over the boundaries.

Like it or not, we live in a male dominated society, not just in Sri Lanka but globally. The simple reason behind this is the culture that has been set ages ago. If a girl dates a “few” men, she will be given a derogative title and rumours will spread in a fraction of a second.

But, if the same is done by a guy, we say “that’s how guys are”. Further they add, that’s how he chooses his wife to be, by going through different experiences. This is being biased, but has been accepted as the norm.

Irrespective of the gender, caste or creed, a person should educate himself first, that’s the right way to choose their partner in life and not by the experience of dating many people.

It’s really appreciative to see our government taking immediate action, like the banning of pornographic sites and “such” parties.

But, this should initiate in the family, especially by the mother. All these UNNECESSARY trouble can be avoided, if the female realizes her value and importance.

It’s only if a woman tempts a man, that he’ll be tempted. Being a woman, does not necessarily make her a “Lady”.
