Always in the limelight

Tribes who lived during the past centuries were known as Maurees from New Zealand, Aborigines from Australia, Red Indians from South America, Zoolas from Africa and Veddas from Sri Lanka.

They didn’t know anything about time, neither about time management. They were ignorant. But these tribes worshipped the sun and the moon as gods. They observed their movements and knew when the sun rises the day begins and when the sun sets night falls and the moon appears. So they obeyed the laws of nature.

As years advanced people developed a curiosity to seek knowledge and invent. I was born in Switzerland to a middle class family in 1923. John Harword was my father’s name who gave birth to a pretty kid that became very famous. So, I belong to a reputed family who brought a big fortune.

I grew in the lap of luxury looking pretty. My face was chubby and round. My hands kept busy through day and night cleaning the sweat on my face. May be due to heat. I was looked after well by my parents. I wore a glass cover on my face for protection and to safeguard from dust. A silver pad on my back kept me warm and made my figure attractive. Between my ears I had a silver strap at times in gold. My family was large and they grew in all shapes and sizes. Some round, some square and thin. We turned about to be more attractive and people took a liking.

My parents didn’t want me to be with them any longer and sent me to Sri Lanka for future prospects. Sri Lanka is a tropical country which has a variety of climatic conditions. Warm and humid, warm and dry, and harshly dry areas. I made my home in Colombo the largest trading centre of the country. I was displayed in a glass show case in a huge shopping centre. Here I made new friends.

They had beautiful names as Rolex, Omega, Citizen to name some. Passers by gave me a polite smile although they didn’t show any indication to grab me at once. They whispered to their spouses that I was the prettiest of all.

I felt proud and happy. Finally, a handsome youth got interested and took me under his care.

He was so happy that he found the ideal gift to be given to his girlfriend for her birthday. This new lady of mine was a pretty socialite who danced and wined with the rich. She sported round and accompanied me to state functions and tamashas. We had a rollicking time. I enjoyed her company offering her accurate time.

I am glad that I have made my country proud and that ‘Swiss’ wrist watches have become a big demand around the globe.
