Terrance Silva remembered today

Veteran teacher and socialist activist, Terrance N. de Silva’s 50th death anniversary celebrations will be held today, Oct. 4 at 10.00 a.m. at Terrance N. de Silva Vidyalaya premises, Kolonnawa.To bestow merit on him are all-night pirith ceremony will be conducted on Oct. 9 followed by a sanghika dana for fifty bhikkus.Prof. Carlo Fonseka will deliver the commemoration speech.

The event is organised by the Terrance Commemoration Committee under the patronage of College old boys, teachers and residents in the area.


Krishnamurti talk

A recorded public talk on “In the present is the whole of time”, delivered by the late Indian sage J. Krishnamurti, will be replayed at the Study Centre, Beddegana, Duwa Road, Kotte today (Sunday) at 10.30 a.m.


Dr. Padma Gunaratne elected President NSA

Dr. Padma Gunaratne Consultant Neurologist of the National Hospital was elected President of National Stroke Association (NSA) while Dr. M.T.M. Riffsy, Dr. Udaya Ranawaka and Tissa Bandaranayake were elected Vice Presidents at the AGM of the Association held recently.

Dr. Harsha Gunesekara was elected Secretary and Mrs. Rosanne Warnakulasuriya as Assistant Secretary, M.U. De Silva as Treasurer and Daya Abeysekera and Dr. Arjun Fernando as joint editors.A seven member council comprising of Dr. Preethi Wijegoonewardene, Dr. Lalith Wijeratne, Prema Cooray, Rienzie T. Wijetilleke, Baron de Livera, Dr. Lal Panapitiya and Dr. Sepalika Mendis were also elected.

Dr. J.B. Peiris is the Patron of the National Stroke Association and Dr. Jagath Wijesekara the Vice Patron.


Thalassaemia patient needs help

Seventeen-year-old Prabath Prasanga is suffering from Thalassaemia for which treatment was given at Adult and Adolescent Thalassaemia Care Unit of North Colombo Teaching Hospital, Ragama.The chelation therapy and for the daily dose of Deferasirox recommended by Head of the Dept. of Medicine and Consultant in charge of Thalassaemia Unit of the University of Kelaniya, Prof. A. P. Premawardhena will cost him Rs. 7,000 per month.

Rs. 1,000 Army commemorative coin

The deduction of Rs. 1,000 from the September salary of Army officers and soldiers was effected to issue them with the specially designed 60th anniversary commemorative currency coin to the same value, and not for coverage of expenditure incurred in the anniversary events as stated in some reports, a media release from the Army Headquarters said.

“The Army Headquarters has not taken any decision to effect a deduction to cover the expenses of the 60th anniversary, but to issue the Rs. 1,000 commemorative coin as a token on the occasion along with a separate Army T-shirt and a cap”, the release said.


Security beefed up at Sri Lanka HC

Indian Minister of External Affairs S. M. Krishna has assured Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama that immediate steps have been taken to strengthen security at the Sri Lankan High Commission in New Delhi, following an attack on Friday.

Indian Foreign Minister Krishna who telephoned his Lankan counterpart also assured that action will be taken against the perpetrators. He said that the incident is contrary to the cooperative relationship that exists between the two countries and certainly does not reflect the close and warm bilateral friendship that exists between India and Sri Lanka.


World Habitat Day confab in Negombo

The World Habitat Day National Conference and Exhibition will be held tomorrow October 5 at 9.30 a.m. at Negombo Town Hall.

Minister of Housing and Common Amenities, Ferial Ashraff and Minister of Urban Development and Sacred Area Development, Dinesh Gunawardena will be the chief guests. The Presentation of the Greater Negombo Development Program and the District Settlement Program will be the main features of this conference.


Sabaragamuwa teacher vacancies to be filled

Vacancies for 741 teachers exist in the primary schools of the Sabaragamuwa Province, Governor Janaka Priyantha Bandara said.The Governor promised that considerable attention will be paid towards providing employment to the unemployed graduates in the Sabaragamuwa Province. The Governor made these observations during a meeting with the unemployed graduates held at the Governor’s office.

He said the Treasury has granted approval to absorb 540 teachers to fill the existing vacancies in the province.These teachers will be appointed to the schools based on the curricula needs of the schools, the Governor added.


Pujacha Pujaniyanan at Kalutara Vidyalaya

The Old Boys’ Association of Kalutara Vidyalaya, Kalutara has organised a ceremony to pay tribute to teachers under the title as “Pujacha Pujaniyanan” on Oct. 5 at 9 a.m. at Sir Cyril de Soyza Memorial Hall. The ceremony will be held under the patronage of Education Minister Susil Premajayantha. All the teachers who had retired since 1941 will be felicitated with awards presented by the present teachers.
