National volleyball player killed in road accident

A van that ploughed into a trishaw carrying National Volleyball
players from the Southern province in the Polonnaruwa area resulted in
the death of Mayuri Madusha(21) National Volleyball player while two
other players sustained injuries on Friday, a spokesman for the Ministry
of Sports told the Sunday Observer.The incident occurred around 10 pm on
Friday opposite the Venus Private Hospital at the 28th milepost in
Polonnaruwa when a van collided with a trishaw carrying the three women
Volleyball players who were returning after participating in the
National Sports Festival at Polonnaruwa organised by the Sports
Ministry.
Following the collision the three-wheeler turned turtle crushing all
the three women volleyball players who were rushed to the Polonnaruwa
hospital. The deceased woman Volleyball player has been identified as
Mayuri Madushika (21) of Deberawewa who represented the Southern
province. She succumbed to her injuries at the Polonnaruwa government
hospital on Friday night. Another woman Volleyball player who sustained
serious injuries has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of
the Polonnaruwa hospital. The trishaw driver and the other woman
Volleyball player were also admitted to the Polonnaruwa hospital. The
driver of the van has been taken into custody by the Polonnaruwa police.
