FOOTBALL: Young Birds Sports Club retained the title for the third successive year with a close 1-nil win over Municipal Council team from Nuwara Eliya at the Mayor's Trophy Football tournament final played at the Race Course Grounds, Nuwara Eliya. The tournament was conducted by the Nuwara Eliya Football League.In a well-contested final, both sides failed to produce a goal in the first half. Young Birds SC with better team work and methodical play scored the winning goal in 67th minute through J. Sanoj.

Fifteen teams participated in the tournament and the champions received the Mayor's Cup and Rs. 20,000 together with replicas and certificates.

Runners-up Municipal Council team received a trophy and certificates while the third placed team Rangers SC received certificates. According to L. Nehrujee MMC and President Nuwara Eliya FL this tournament was conducted to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Nuwara Eliya Football League. L.F.
