Important resumé tips

Content

Create a Skills heading that lists your skills in two or three words. These skills should match the position for which you are applying. If you have a series of skills, instead of listing them singularly, summarize them by using concise sentences.

Not recommended:Computer Skills,Accounting/Payroll, Administrative

Recommended:Accounting Software,Supervision of Accounting and Payroll Processing

Office Administration

The first set of skills are vague and doesn’t tell the reader much about your competency regarding the position you are applying for. If the content is not top-notch, it will be dismissed. Be as specific as possible, but avoid wordiness.

Not recommended:Generated resports to assist in W2 processing.

Recommended:

Worked directly with Payroll Manager to ensure proper W2 processing for over 1000 employees. The second example gives the reader a more well-rounded vision of your background and past job duties.

Keywords

Using the proper keywords while writing your resume lets your prospective employer know that you understand your industry and that you paid attention to his ad.

Example:

Job Ad:

Seeking a customer service representative to be a liaison between us and our clients.

Duties include preparing spreadsheets of daily orders, responding to client concerns, reviewing order entries inputted by clerks and tracking orders shipped by warehouse staff. Requirements: knowledge of SAP, two years customer service experience and superior communication skills.

Your keyword Skills heading

should read:

Client specialist

Management of clerical order entry

Supervision of order delivery

Order performance status reports

Other Tips

Ensure that the level of writing you display in your resume matches your desired salary. Do not state that you would like an entry-level position if you are experienced in the field you are applying for.

Prioritize the content in your resume. Important information should be listed first. Instead of simply stating what you can do efficiently – example, type 70 wpm – also include how this skill benefited your previous employer. In doing so, your prospective employer will see exactly what you can do for her. Remember to proofread your resume for grammatical and spelling errors.
